Priest and Architect in the Outback

John Cyril Hawes was an extraordinary man who dedicated his life to serving God and the remote communities of Western Australia. Born in England in 1876, he was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1901 and set sail for Australia shortly after. Upon his arrival in Perth, he began his mission to provide both spiritual and physical support to the scattered and often isolated communities of the outback.

Hawes's architectural legacy can be seen in some of Western Australia's most iconic churches. His most famous design is St Peter's Cathedral in Kalgoorlie, a magnificent Gothic revival cathedral that was completed in 1902. It is considered one of the finest examples of church architecture in Australia and is a testament to Hawes's skill as an architect.

In addition to St Peter's Cathedral, Hawes designed a number of other churches in Western Australia, including Christ Church in Nullagine, St Luke's Church in Port Hedland, and St Hilda's Church in Marble Bar. These churches are all unique in their own way, reflecting the different architectural styles and materials available at the time. However, they all share a common feature: they are all beautifully designed and built to last.

Challenges and Successes

Serving isolated communities in the outback was not without its challenges. Hawes often had to travel long distances by horseback or camel to reach his parishioners. The weather conditions were harsh, and the terrain was rugged. However, Hawes never gave up on his mission to provide spiritual support to those who needed it most.

One of the most challenging aspects of Hawes's work was dealing with the racism that was prevalent in Western Australia at the time. Aboriginal people were often treated as second-class citizens, and they were often denied access to basic services. Hawes was a strong advocate for the rights of Aboriginal people, and he worked tirelessly to improve their lives.

Despite the challenges, Hawes's work was also marked by great success. He was instrumental in establishing a number of schools and hospitals in remote communities. He also helped to establish the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which provides medical care to people who live in remote areas. Hawes's legacy is one of service, compassion, and creativity. He was a man of faith who used his skills as an architect to make a real difference in the lives of others.

Legacy and Impact

John Cyril Hawes died in 1950, but his legacy lives on. The churches that he designed continue to serve as places of worship and community for people all over Western Australia. His work has inspired other architects, and his commitment to social justice continues to be an example for us all.

Hawes's life is a reminder that we can all make a difference in the world, no matter how small. He was a man who believed in the power of love and compassion, and he lived his life accordingly. His story is an inspiration to us all, and it challenges us to think about how we can use our own skills and talents to make the world a better place.
