The novel opens with the family arriving in the small town of Sutton, Nebraska. The town has been devastated by a tornado, and the family is struggling to find a place to live. They eventually find a house to rent, but it is small and cramped. The family is also struggling to adjust to the small-town lifestyle. They are used to living in a big city, and they find the pace of life in Sutton to be stifling.
In addition to the challenges of adjusting to their new life, the family is also dealing with the emotional fallout of the tornado. The storm has left a deep scar on the family, and they are all struggling to come to terms with what they have been through. The father, Tom, is withdrawn and distant. The mother, Sarah, is struggling with depression. And the children, 12-year-old Lily and 9-year-old Sam, are both struggling with anxiety.
As the family struggles to adjust to their new life, they begin to encounter the strange and eccentric characters who inhabit Sutton. There is Mrs. Jenkins, the elderly neighbor who is convinced that the tornado was a sign of the apocalypse. There is Mr. Smith, the town drunk who is always looking for a handout. And there is Tornado King, the mysterious figure who is said to have caused the tornado.
The family's encounters with these characters provide both comic relief and a deeper understanding of the human condition. Through these encounters, the family begins to learn how to cope with the challenges they are facing. They learn how to laugh in the face of adversity, and they learn how to find hope in the darkest of times.
STILL LIFE WITH TORNADO KING is a darkly humorous novel that explores the themes of family, loss, and resilience. The novel is a moving and heartwarming story about a family who is struggling to rebuild their lives after a devastating storm.
