Subzero Winning The 1992 Melbourne Cup Subzero: More Than A Melbourne Cup Hero

Early life

Subzero was foaled on 10 September 1985 at Baramul Stud in Victoria. He was a chestnut colt sired by Chilly Air and out of Eskimo Queen.

As a yearling, Subzero was sold for just $10,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. He was Free Downloadd by Bill and Judy Mitchell, who sent him into training with Lee Freedman.

Subzero made his racing debut at Moonee Valley in April 1988. He finished third in that race, but he showed enough promise to suggest that he could be a stayer of some ability.

Rise to the top

Subzero won his first race at Flemington in May 1988. He then went on to win the Group 3 Geelong Cup in October of that year.

In 1989, Subzero won the Group 1 Caulfield Cup. This was a major breakthrough for the horse and his connections, and it established him as one of the leading stayers in Australia.

Subzero's next target was the Melbourne Cup. He finished second in the race in 1989 and 1990, but he finally won the "race that stops a nation" in 1992.

Subzero's victory in the Melbourne Cup was a triumph for the little horse that could. He had overcome adversity to become one of the most successful stayers in Australian history.

Subzero retired from racing in 1993. He was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2006.

Legacy

Subzero is remembered as one of the greatest stayers in Australian history. He won 15 of his 42 starts, including the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, and Geelong Cup.

Subzero's achievements are even more remarkable when you consider his humble beginnings. He was foaled from a relatively unknown sire and mare, and he was sold for just $10,000 as a yearling.

Subzero's story is a reminder that anything is possible if you have the heart and determination to succeed.

The special bond between horse and jockey

One of the most special things about Subzero was the bond that he shared with his jockey, Damien Oliver.

Oliver rode Subzero in all of his major victories, and the two of them formed a close partnership.

Oliver has said that Subzero was a "once-in-a-lifetime" horse. He was a horse that gave his all every time he raced, and he never gave up.

The bond between Subzero and Oliver is a reminder of the special relationship that can exist between horse and jockey.

Subzero was a true champion. He overcame adversity to become one of the most successful stayers in Australian history.

His story is an inspiration to us all, and it is a reminder that anything is possible if you have the heart and determination to succeed.

The book "Subzero: More Than Melbourne Cup Hero" tells the full story of this remarkable horse. It is a must-read for any fan of horse racing or for anyone who loves a good underdog story.
